If you haven’t seen on them on the beach or heard about their destructive power – you could soon.
Asian Clams are known aggressive invaders that have significant environmental impacts to Lake Tahoe, including degraded water quality, disruption to Lake Tahoe sports fisheries and increased levels of calcium through the concentration of dead shell matter that may promote other invasive species like the Quagga Mussel.
Alpengroup in conjunction with its Tahoe Divers Conservancy has been diving in the freezing cold waters of March and April at Lake Tahoe working on this invasive species with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board, Nevada Division of State Lands, University of California-Davis, and the University of Nevada- Reno.

Very few divers venture into the cold depths of this blue jewel, but the Tahoe Divers are very committed to making a difference (and must have very thick dry suits!) while ensuring Tahoe’s continued sustainability for generations to come.
